Ruby Bridges Ballgown & Headpiece

$4,000.00

I JUST GRADUATED FROM NYU DEBT FREE!! TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!

I devote this stunning gown and graduation cap that I designed to the black women who fought for me to be where I am today. One woman stood out to me: Ruby Bridges. She’s the 1st black person to attend an all white elementary school. During the intense racism of the Civil Rights era, Ruby faced violent threats, attacks against her family, and daily harassment from segregationists as federal Marshalls escorted her to school. She was only 6.

During slavery and Jim Crow, education was denied to Black people because those in power saw the power in having knowledge. Laws were enacted to outlaw literacy among enslaved Africans, as literacy was seen as a path to freedom and empowerment.

But what gave Ruby the resilience to overcome?

God.

In the midst of adversity, Ruby leaned upon God for protection. She knew that God was guiding her through tribulations. Her unbreakable faith in her higher power paved the way for desegregation in schools, educational reform, and for black women to now be among one of the most educated groups in the U.S.

I stand upon the shoulders of black women who opened doors for me to not only be the 1st in my family to graduate uni, but to also serve as an MLK Scholar, to be a Hear Us grantee, and to now be an alumni of the Tisch School of the Arts. God, I exalt your name

I partnered with @taylorcassidyj to be my muse because of her impactful series “Fast Black History,” that sheds light on overlooked Black figures. In her powerful book “Black History is Your History,” Taylor exhibits black history through the lens of underrepresented stories and personal connection, reinforcing the message that Black history is an essential part of all history.

As I strut into this new chapter, I carry with me the prayers of the women who came before me. May my journey be a beacon for others, proving that what once seemed impossible is not only possible, but promised through faith and perseverance. This is only the beginning.
