Reclaiming My Body Ballgown and Gele
Stop the scroll. Yes, this gown is sculpted from over 300 Barbie dolls. Yes, MoMA commissioned me to design it. And YES, every single doll was upcycled into couture fabulousness!! #SustainableBarbieCouture
“Reclaiming My Body” transforms what fashion can be: a collision of resilience, identity, and high glamour. Honoring the term “The Dolls,” often used in LGBTQIA+ communities to celebrate trans women, this piece uplifts feminine energy while critiquing the impossible beauty standards projected onto women’s bodies.
Behind Barbie’s glamour lies a deeper truth—this gown carries a story far beyond fashion. Trans people are 4x more likely to be victims of violent crime, and 8x more likely to commit suicide—the highest rate of any demographic globally. Black trans women are 27x more likely to be murdered. And in just 2024, over 350 trans lives were taken for simply existing.
These aren’t numbers—they are lives. Lives lost to a world that dehumanizes trans bodies, reducing us to stereotypes, punchlines, or objects of desire. With 71% of Americans never having met a trans person, media’s depictions often become the only narrative. It’s time to change the narrative.
Without trans women, there is no Pride. Without “The Dolls,” there is no movement. This gown is our history, our pain, and our power. “Reclaiming My Body” is how I take it all back—and wear it boldly.✨
