"Baptized in Light" Gown & Gele
This summer, I declared my faith in Jesus by getting baptized—the best decision of my life.
This couture gown and Gele is my living testimony—once drowning in the ocean’s darkness, but always swimming upward towards the light. It symbolizes resilience, transformation, and the truth that no shadow can dim my light.
As the child of a pastor, my faith once came from fear—begging God to “fix” me while battling who I am. But over time, I realized what I prayed away was never broken. God made me this way for a reason.
Too often, queer people are told that we are outside the reach of God’s love. But my walk with Him reminds me of the opposite: God is love, and His light is for everyone.
I designed this gown with meaning in every detail: a denim bodice to reflect flowing water, hair-embroidered sleeves shaped like waves, Ankara fabric gracing the lower half to ground me in heritage, and a Gele radiating light above it all. Together, these elements narrate my journey—washing away fear, embracing the truth of who I am, and rising above the aphotic depths toward His love.
Even in my darkest days, this gown is a reminder to keep swimming upward towards God’s light. With God by my side, I’ll always find the light. #blessed
